Company Flags

Able Flags offer custom made company flags using all the traditional and modern methods.

The Main Methods are:

  • Sewn (also known as Applique) – Great for individual flags, very traditional look and durable.
  • Dye Printed – also a traditional method but more economic for multiple quantities and complex designs. The materials are the same as sewn flags.
  • Digitally Printed – The Modern way to produce advertising and custom company flags. The colours can be complex and accurate colour matching is possible. Within the Flagmakers Group we have 4 of the best digital flag printers in the industry.

Design of Company Flags

The design of company flags should be as simple as possible. They are used to make a statement and let people know where you are. Ideally company flags should just be a logo or name, using good contrasting colours. They will be constantly moving in the wind so complex detail will always be hard to see.

Colour

With traditional sewn company flags we are limited to the ranges of stock materials produced by material manufacturers. These usually provide a close match for most corporate colours. Remember it is usually impossible to see slight differences in shade when a flag is up the pole, but occasionally we have to dye print a special batch.

Dye Printing and digital printing offer greater flexibility of colour and we can match to Pantone references and use 4 colour process artwork or images if necessary.

Quantity

Sewn & Appliqué methods are generally only cost effective for small quantities, although they do produce very high quality and durable flags.

Dye Printing and Digital Printing are appropriate for larger quantities of company flags because the production processes are semi-automated and they enable high volumes of flags to be produced quickly.

It is generally considered good practice to have two company flags available for each flagpole so one can be flying whilst the other is being washed or repaired.

When To Choose Single or Double Sided Company Flags

The normal way in which company flags are produced is known as ‘image (or printed) through to reverse’. It is often thought that flags have to read correctly both sides however this is not the recommended way. When printed through to reverse the rear side of the flag is the same design as the face but mirror image. Remember company flags are constantly moving and both sides will be viewed as it flutters.

Double sided flags are made by finishing two flags back to back, usually with an interliner. This adds extra weight, expense and often causes the flag to wear faster so we don’t generally recommend it. There are occasions when a double sided flag is needed such as for use on an angled pole outside a shop, where it is in more of a static situation and will be approached from both sides.

It is a popular misconception that flags should be read from both sides. It must be remembered that flags should fly in as light a breeze as possible and do not always extend in the same direction.

If company flags must read correctly from both sides, you should consider the additional weight and the cost involved in manufacturing and sewing together of a double thickness flag.
